Protocol
- Five academic data bases were used for searching the literature: Science Direct; Web of science/web of knowledge; Wiley online library; SCOPUS (Elsevier); Google scholar.
- Searches were run using the following combination of search terms: “Impact assessment “;“Impact assessment tools”; “Impact assessment methods”; “Impact assessment in agriculture”; “Impact assessment in environment”; “Impact assessment CAP”; “Impact assessment Agrienvironmental schemes”; “Impact assessment Water Framework Directive”; “Impact assessment Rural development plan”; “Impact assessment Nitrates sensitive areas”; “Impact assessment decoupling”.
- The searches identified over 1000 articles (including duplicates) published up to 31 October 2011.

Articles to be included in the literature review were selected by comparing titles and subtitles as well as reading the abstracts. A final decision was only made at the review stage (i.e. by a full read). Articles were selected if they focused on:
- Impact assessment in agriculture;
- Impact assessment in environment;
- Impact assessment in European policies;
- Impact assessment tools;
- Impact assessment methods.
- The total number of resulting articles to be included in the “IA tools applied to impact assessment of EU policies in agriculture and environment” literature review was 135.
